Music and Family

Hi everyone! Music in my family has always been super important to us. Growing up, I was aways going to concerts and music festivals, listening to music 24/7 in my house, in the car, etc. with my siblings, parents, and even grandparents. Someone who I have always had an interest for their music taste is my mom. During this interview my mom talks about her love for 80's music and the things she listened to growing up.

During this conversation with my mom, I asked her 6 questions. The first question I asked was "what artist did you listen to most growing up and in your teens?" She replied with "mostly, I listened to Prince and Michael Jackson". She also listened to Janet Jackson as well as the Jackson Five. She continued with "these two artists changed the music industry and how I looked at music forever because of how incredible they were. It was my dream to see them live, and I actually got to live that dream out front row at a Michael Jackson concert in Savannah Georgia." The second question I asked was "what is your favorite song?" She replied with "Purple Rain" by Prince" She explained how much she loved the beauty of the song, the genre, and the message of the song. She told me how it was so catchy and how it made her love for the artist grow so much fonder.

The third question I asked was "does music calm you down and if so, what type? She answered with "yes, music does calm me down. It slows down my thinking and allows me to reflect and think. It gives me a sense of peace and comfort, especially worship music as of recently. I used to react with anger so quickly and often but since I started listening to worship music, it has helped me calm down and really think about and process things" Since I have started following Jesus, I had been praying for this moment for her to come to Jesus as well and find comfort in worshipping him so this made me really excited to hear. The fourth question I asked was "is there any music you don't like?" She replied with "i love all genres of music but if there's one I had to choose, I would choose hard rap because its just too fast and nasty for me. Some of the things that they talk about in songs makes me uncomfortable and I would rather not listen to things like that." The fifth question I asked was "what was your favorite song as a kid?" She replied with "Goodbye Stranger" by Supertramp. She would listen to it in the car all the time on the way to her middle school. Her mother would get so frustrated because it would be the only song she listened to for months.

The final question I asked my mother was "Is there an instrument you want to learn to play?" She answered with "I used to play piano all the time and I was actually really good at it but if I had to pick another to learn, it would be guitar. I always thought the guitar was so fascinating and cool but I never had the patience or time to learn it. I could however hear something on the radio for the first time, go home, and play it on the piano perfectly almost every time. That has always been one of my favorite party tricks. I ended the conversation and thanked her for her time. I loved getting to learn more about my mothers taste in music and how it shaped her as a person throughout her teen years.

  3. I loved reading the interview with your mom! I thought it was really cool to hear about her love for Prince. I can kinda relate to that because I know my dad and my uncle used to listen to Prince a lot together! I also think it's cool to hear how she always wanted to go see him and Michael Jackson in concert, and that caried on with you and Taylor Swift.
